240v Ice cream machine into a 230v Generator

Hi all, new here.

Just trying to sort out a problem for the mrs. So all or any help would be greatly appreciated

The mrs. has been trying to convert a minibus into an ice cream van. We are now at the stage where we need to power the ice cream machine. We are trying to use a generator for this.

Here we go: On wash/rinse cycle the generator runs fine switch the machine to run the mix through and the breaker on the generator is tripped straight away. And we cant seem to get past this point. I will now supply the specs of both machine & generator so please any help would be great, thanx.

The Machine: Taylor Freezemaster 320-44

240v

Min amp 17

Max amp 20

Phase 1

Other motor amp 7

This is all the info i can find on the machine.

The Genny. Loncin 6500DDC 6.5 KVA Petrol

Rated voltage 115/230v

Rated frequency 50Hz

Rated output 5.0Kw

Maximum output 5.5Kw

Power factor 1.0

The ice cream machine has 20A + 7A = 27A Start up possibly much more than this.

5000/230 = 21A supply from genny

concur with Apache,

its not simply the running current that is so much an issue, I dont think,

but more the inrush/start-up current,

generators should really be sized at the largest load then doubled to allow for the inrush/start-up required,

seems like your generator simply isnt big enough,

this may, or may not be the total issue, but from the limited info on the internet, and not being able to actually measure the required current required this deffo sounds like the most likely problem.

Sorry im not very clued up on the mathmatics & understanding of electrics.

So what is needed from the genny or is their a way around this issue. to stop the breaker cutting off?

have you tried the machine on a normal supply (to rule out machine problems?)

The van is parked in a yard with the use of a power hook up. The machine did run fine but for only about 10 - 15 mins. no breaker in the hook up point so blew the fuse which was a 16a.

your ice cream machine may run on the generator fine on paper,

but it needs a much larger current(more amps) to start, than it does to run,

and in all honesty, even when running it would be pushing your genny hard all the time, which isnt a good thing, gennys are mostly designed to have something like a 60% load,

this is why soft ice cream vans are running, they use a slightly different technology, involving larger alternators and invertors, alongside purpose built ice cream machines,

I assume your machine is a normal shop one, hence the largish loading from it.

that sounds about right, typical overload for which the breaker is designed to cope with for a limited time.

So really we are looking at a Larger Genny or a different machine with a lower ampage yeah?

bigger genny is into a lot of cash TBH, and diesel,

you really need to look at a mobile ice cream machine, not a normal shop one,

only my opinion mind.

probably, but depends on startup power needed

on paper, yes deffo, 2kW should do so easily enough,

even on a start up should only be max 4.5kW so should be OK,

please dont quote me and come after me if it doesnt, I'll blame the guy next door anyway.!

BTW, your genny will get a hammering if you intend running this all day.!
