Hi All,

I'm working on a university project, where we are piloting a SELV trace heated walkway. So basically there's a fixed installation isolation transformer - 230v to 24v ac, 1kVA, which has the output leading to an external junction box, with spade terminal connectors.

The walkway will be modular, the idea being that the people assembling the walkway can connect each module to the next using pre-assembled spade terminal interconnects. So I want to make sure that non-electricians working with this SELV isolated 24v supply is allowed? I can't seem to find information on this anywhere.

Obviously the fixed installation mains to 24v transformer would be fitted by an electrician, but what I'm hoping is that he can fit the system, then the builders can do the remainder of the SELV wiring later, without breaking any regulations.

Any help would be appreciated!

Cheers

Dave

Forget spade terminals and use some form of 2 pole plug and socket that any idiot can plug in and unplug without getting it wrong.

Hi Dave,

I really wanted to do that too, but finding any plugs that'll withstand corrosion, handle the current AND are cheap proved too difficult :) I did initially think about just using IECs but thats illegal for anything below 50V. Darn regulations!!!

Is this a part of your thesis? We can help you if you input as much information as you are allowed, and I am sure plagiarism would be negligible if you use this forum as a reference for your research.

Hi Manator,

Nope this system is not actually part of any academic work, and I was really just asking about whether there were regulations relating to SELV installations, and who is allowed to work on/with them.

Cheers

Dave

I think you can do what you like as long as its not domestic work for profit ,  legally that is .   Don't think Michael Faraday worried too much about legalities, being a registered Sparks or even joining a union ,  he just cracked on with it .

There is a legal requirement to be " competent" I believe.   Others on here have a better understanding of the legal side.
