BTW, your heatshrink the first time round(insulation) needs to be of adequate thickness to offer the same degree of protection as the original, so may well need two layers anyway,

then an overlayer of sheath. :)

 
How about, crimping then with 2 or 3 layers of heat shrink, you can get the kV/mm values from the makers, sufficient to mimic the kV/mm values of the original insulation.

Heat shrink normally has a higher dielectric srength than normal pvc insulation anyway.

Next up a layer of sheath cut off an offcut of tails, cut longitudinally and wrapped around the joint, with this then being shrinked over once or twice to keep it in place?
