Hi all,

been to look at a local job today where a lady has taken over an old industrial unit to use an art studio.

She has asked me to take out the old 3 phase electricals and turn it all into single phase, as she is only going to be running a few lights and sockets.

The single phase stuff she wants to keep is all running off the 3 phase board (obviously) so i suggested taking out the circuits she wants removing, (lots of jumbled strip lighting circuits that have lived above a false ceiling which is no longer there) and keeping the 3 phase board. As far as I can see, the circuits she wants keeping are pretty much balanced out over the phases.

So what Im asking is, if she does this, will she basically get a similair electric bill as if I rip it all out and turn the whole shebang into single phase?

Hoping ive explained this adequately lol

TIA

basically, the gal is a friend more than a customer, and is hoping that she can cut her electric bills by going single phase.

But being as its all single phase equipment that is in there, I dont think itll work like that - am I right?

The question is do you pay more for 3 phase supply over single phase for the same single phase installation?

Sprocket,

I suspect the standing charge would be less, you'd need to check with the DNO.

I think Andy means fit a single phase "kit" to the 3ph db once the metering etc. is changed.

This effectively links the L1, L2 & L3 at the board making the 3ph board into a single, as you only have one phase coming in then no Kaboom!

One thing, art studio - pottery? - Kiln?

Kiln if she goes that way may need 3ph?

I would suggest you have a good chat as to what she wants to do before you make any changes.

In case she has ideas of expansion.

Remebering that it would be too easy to gobble up 80A where as you probably now have 240A available "ish" if you see what I mean?

I think what Andy means is to take the single tail to L1 and then loop it to L2 and L3 in the consumer unit.

Can't type fast enough!
