Advice On A Temporary Generator

Hi

I have been asked to supply a generator for a small shop to keep it trading while the electricity is switched off. My worry is that about 5 years ago  one of our clients did the very same thing however the generator fried the server which shut down a big furniture factory untll a new server was installed. So as you can see I'm very concerned about supplying this generator. Could someone advise me on the correct generator to do this please.

probably best speak to someone who supplies generators, they will be able to recommend a suitable one

If you have sensitive equipment with a low load then a UPS system may be more suited.

Like Andy said, the best option is to get a generator supply company to do a site survey, a lot of these companies do this for free or refund the cost when an order is placed. Any sensitive equipment should always go through a UPS system when supplied by a generator, the UPS if chosen correctly will take in surges better than a server would and protect it from damage.

As everyone has said “speak to the manufacturer”. Many places will try to sell you a site generator, they are wholly unsuitable and in some cases downright dangerous.

Thanks guys. The original generator I mentioned came from a hire company and we unsuccessfully sued them, however I have emailed around and now spoken to four companies who have all basically offered me the same sort of generator and guaranteed the server and PC's will be ok.
