Got a problem with the Model T (Escort Diesel van)

Dropped the fuel tank to replace the guage sender , found broken earth wire instead , mended, guage now works , tank back in position .

Problem :- Engine will only run for 10 seconds before cutting out .

Never had a scrap of starting trouble with it in 100,000 m TBH

Any ideas ? Its stuck in the middle of service gulley at the moment .

You will probably need to bleed the diesel system mate, normal if you break fuel lines on diesel engines.

I don't bother any more I have a good mate who does my vehicles for me in exchange for using my workshop for his sideline repairs!

As Zee says as long as you have the lines in the right place!

I'm bleeding the system with the priming unit on engine , fuel pumps through but seems to be drawing in air from somewhere .

Have to get someone to help me push it into garage then jack up again .

Always the same ..3 weeks with no work ....get a board change for Monday,,,,,,van craps out . :C Life gets teejus don't it ?

Have you connected your fuel line correctly Deke? :innocent AndyGuinness
Yes I'm pretty sure I did , there'd be fuel leaking from top of tank by now I reckon.

Could be all sorts of things,,

You could have dislodged or kinked the fuel line or just got air in it like the others say.

My gauge hasn't worked in years and I have never run out,, for the gain it's just too much agro;)

I see that now Noz, been kaput for 6 months but I've been filling the tank every 350 miles , then lost the sequence and never really sure how much is in there ,so got a sender off flea bay that I didn't need , now a major pain in the buttress.

Rev,

Not quite true, most modern diesels do need bleeding, though many are self bleeding, to an extent.

Mind AFAIK Deke's van is not modern!

Yep, did that.

Got it working today , started engine and started pumping the fuel primer plunger before it could cut out , tickover was ragged for a bit but kept running , then smoothed out and running OK . Presumably all the air was drawn through the engine , seems to have done the job.

Could be a nightmare if you ran the tank dry I would guess, modern Fords don't have a primer fitted.
