From reading Apprentice's thread on Direct Debits  I starting to think ........... one day  the banking computer system will crash and cause absolute mayhem .

The Natwest  (RBS) system has crashed twice in recently although I find it very useful to use online .    In fact its becoming a PITA to have to go to a branch to pay a cheque in now  as they closed my local branch .  The next nearest is in bandit country , the queues  are horrendous with people conducting lengthy business at the cashires window .

Its quicker to drive to an adjacent town.

Same with your  internet connection , if it goes down and you are running a business online  you've had it .

You're not wrong, Deke, but I'm not sure you are right either!

I know what you mean about our vulnerability when it comes to the internet, but remember having absolutely no clue how much money you had without balancing your cheque book? I've written 3 cheques this year. (That said most of our business money comes in as cheques).

I am seriously considering offering discount to people paying online (actually a surcharge if they pay by cheque....................)

Internet banking is so convenient, but if it went away tomorrow it would just go back to the old days.

Yes I take your point , although many people have a large amount of DDs  etc   or you are waiting for a  BACs payment , the net goes down , would they rush to raise a cheque and get it posted  or use it as an excuse for delayed payment. ?

Another thing struck me last night ,  paying the VAT on-line  , what if t'internet was broken ,  and such as when you come to submit self assessment and can't.

They'd be fining you pronto .
