hi

I am newly qualified and seek advice on the following:

I have arrived at a job and the previously electrical has left 2 sets of armored cables short (both 3 core 4mm wire).

One armored cable one circuit for outside low voltage lights into a 3AMP fuse - let's call this cable A.

The other end going into a consumer unit in the garage - which suppliers flood light (400watt), fluorescent light (40 watt) a radial (16AMP) socket that doesn't do much hardly ever used - let's call this cable B.

I am thinking the following;

Due to the cables being short terming, i am thinking of doing the following:

Cable A - terminate into a box - earth the armored sheath  - connect to 1.5 twin and earth and terminate into the DB on a 6AMP MCB.

Cable B - terminate into a box - earth the armored sheath - connect to 2.5 twin and earth and terminate into the DB on a 16 AMP MCB.

Am I doing the right thing here..............

Thanks

Personally I would do the extension with 4mm t&e or even 6mm.

The reason being to match the CSA of the SWA cable.  you never know what alterations might happen in the future and what loads it may carry in the future, so I would not be happy having a "weak link" in the chain.

As OnOff and m4tty say,,,,now short is "short"?

If the cables enter the shed then I'd do as you propose,,, but with Dave's recommendation of using larger cables

If they don't reach the shed and you're jointing them outside then I'd use a couple of resin filled joints (if underground) or a couple of galv conduit boxes filled with magic gel (if above ground),,,, both extended with the same size SWA as the cables already are

we are talking about 2 meters short - inside the building - i'll take your advise and use a matching 4mm twin and earth - with 4mm earth cable as well - that way I have like for like on both ends.

thanks guys !
