07/08/2009 mate

and have learnt a lot since then

I am extremely thankful to all who take time out to answer my questions. Sometimes you just need to here that others would do the same or similar to what you was thinking.

Every new job can introduce me or anyone to stuff we have never come across, I had a very old set up recently and was very glade for the advice I received on here, cheers. :x :x

With my family comitments, mortgage, child, expensive wife etc..... it ment that i could not afford to do a full 3 year course and work for someone cheaply, so at thetage of 31 the only thing i could do was a full on fly by night course that i compleated in 1 year, i know that this course would only get me through the exams and i would start to learn when on site (knowing the regs is 1 thing, putting into practice or knowing the best way to get a cable from a-b is another).

this forum has helped me emensly am i am eternaly greatful fo all the help i have had in here! as said before it's better to do a job right.

so thanks to:

Finally catching up on reading the Forum.

Well said all - this is a brilliant place for advice and discussion. I came from a Defence Electronic/Test Equipment Design background so on paper competent to start with - but since becoming an electrician approx 3 years ago I've learned a lot on the domestic side. I still cringe at some of the house wiring I did 25 years ago (what's this bonding stuff anyway!!)

I know how hard up we were 25 years ago - so completely understand the DIY ethic. If I can help someone make a safe job by giving advice I will do so - and I'm pleased most people here feel the same.

Thanks for keeping the Forum true to it's original ideas. Applaud SmileyApplaud SmileyApplaud SmileyApplaud Smiley

This thread has turned into a very interesting excersise, going by the response it has recieved.

We all know the problems with our trade, if you ever work alongside another company on a contract you will see it first hand.

My main point for the post was to illustrate that some people will, if made fun off, never ask a question again, to them it is not worth the ambarrasment.

I was like that when I was 16, I remember it very well.

I asked a question in a full classroom, who then burt into laughter, I also remember the lecturer begin to answer but burt into laughter.

Needless to say I never really asked another silly question.

All my exam results where a distinction, apart from one which was a credit.

By the end of the course people where asking me questions on how to do things. However I dare say I will always be remembered for that one question :p

You can not single out any individual on this forum for thanking, because I have found that all add that special quality to this forum which is very unique to this forum.

I just think its the input from all that make it a good friendly forum.

One of the best parts of this forum, and I bet you have all done it, is, a question may come up that you can not give an answer to right off the top of your head. Next day you look again to see it anwered, then you think to yourself "oh yea I remember now", you have just learned something from a post you had no input in, but have followed, and been given an answer you may need the day or week after.

When I first joined the forum I made a comment about a DIY asking a question, some of the regulars (you know who you are) put me right, is it not better to give them the right advise and hope they do it right, than to fob them off and leave them with no idea how to do it.

I know now what I would rather do.

I would really like to thank all of you, every single one of you because you all make it worthwhile.

If you want to know my hero's on this forum here they are

Andy (cant do that TM thingy)

and last but definately not least

Apache (the Vet and more)

However they could not be as good with advise if it where not for you.

Firstly: Thank you everyone for making this forum what it is. And by the polite friendly and welcoming manner of your posts, making moderating the numerous threads a relatively easy task.

Secondly: Just to remind everyone, there is NO legal requirement for any formal qualifications to undertake any Domestic electrical work in England and Wales. There is a legal requirement to comply with building regulations Part P. Of which, Approved document P gives the procedures DIY'ers should follow to ensure compliance.

So we as a forum are here to help everyone Skilled / Unskilled / Training etc, to carry out electrical work safely & legally providing appropriate unbiased advice to all who may ask.

Thank you again for all of the extremely high calibre advice & guidance given.

Doc H.

As a trainee, and for many years afterwards, when watching someone doing a job I didn`t fully understand, I would always say:

"I know this is a silly question, but...................................."

As a result, I have a good working knowledge of many things I have no interest in doing professionally; yet understand the "hows" and "whys" of a particular trade / job. By asking my "silly questions", I`ve learn how to plumb, carpentize (many would say "butcher", but they`re just jealous;) ), plaster etc.......

To return to GH`s original statement: it`s only easy when you know. :)

KME

ps. DTG: It`s nice to see you back again. How`s tricks?
