Can somebody please clairify what is and is not permissable for bathroom lighting. I've always fitted (LV) shower lights in the zone above baths/showers etc where direct steam is inevitable. But always fitted normal or fire retardent standard LV downlights anywhere else in the bathroom.

Did somebody once quote on here that all bathroom fittings should be the sealed (shower light) type to comply with a building reg or something. Be a bit of a bummer as they seem to be 35w max.

usualy just go on the ip rateing of the light and put it in the correct zone

Bathroom lighting has more to do with the IP rating than voltage. You can put mains lighting anywhere as long as it's correctly IP rated.

Hope this helps

if it is above 2.25m it can be any type you like.

of course use something that is 'appropriate for the location' !

I have always applied the "above 2.25m" rule and just used standard downlights as i said but i'm a bit confused re the IP rating issue.

The snaplite site states that all downlights must be airtight and fire rated??? is this a ploy to get us to buy only their lights?

I have rarely seen anything but standard D/L's @ 50w in bathroom areas clear of bath/shower etc. CONFUSED!!!!

i use click firegaurd, ip 65, they can go above a shower, look nice come in 50 or 35 watt bulbs. u dont want different lights all around the bathroom

Only if you want to comply with building regs.

Last word on this one i promise.

Customer has stated that he will comply with the relevant IP requirement for

bathrooms if i show him the reg.

Been through the EIG to the Building Regs and can find nothing.

Where does it state that normal d/l's can not be used (away from baths/showers) and above 2.25m.

HELP i'm half way through the job and don't want to fall out with good customer.

it doesnt.....

but as a sparky you can advise the customer of using appropriate fittings for the location

advise him of the fire rated types which tend to have a better seal to the plasterboard.

if you are not happy then put it in writing that you have advised against his choice

I usually use the fire fated anyway, it was Batty's and others reference to building regs that i needed clarifying/ and need to reference to the customer.

Is it a building reg??

I know the bathroom zones situation

It is required that IPX$ is used in zones 1 and 2.

There is no requirement to fit any particular IP rating outside the zones.
