Just tried it on my wooden desk and both a good and used battery bounced. I have a battery tester here.

Yes I've tried it and it seems to work. I tried with the same make of battery in case it was a fiddle (he had different makes)

Ah I thought, perhaps the battery changes weight from full to flat? No, both weigh 23g

Because the same fairy that lives in the washing machine and steals my socks also nicks batteries!

I only have dead ones to test, because my Mrs won't let me throw them in the bin. Instead they sit in a plastic pot for months before she takes them for recycling.
