Yesterday afternoon after I'd got back from doing a few small jobs and vsisting our Yacht club to survey any damage (I'll start another post on this) our neighbour came over and asked if I could look at a light fitting that her other half was replacing and it was "tripping the electric"

Obviously I knew immediately what he'd done but she was adamant that he knew what he was doing as he'd done it loads of times previously.....

Well she was wrong,,, he'd also cut and trimmed back all the wires from the multi arm fitting to a ridiculously short just to make it even harder,, oh ,, and they had a dimmer on the 2 way switching also that was now bust

But we all know there is a subtle difference between...

Knowing what you are doing....

And

Understanding what you are doing....

example...

You have had a few Guinness   Guinness   Guinness   Guinness Guinness  Guinness   Guinness

and you need to take a leak....

You may well KNOW that you are relieving yourself of excess fluids...

BUT...

You may not UNDERSTAND that you are doing it in the walk-in wardrobe and not the bathroom!!!!!

example #2

You may well KNOW that you are purchasing a Christmas or birthday present for the good lady....

BUT

You actually have no UNDERSTANDING of what she really likes...

so you have to keep the receipt in case it has to go back for an exchange!!

and so the DIY neighbour may well KNOW he has changed the light...

BUT he has no UNDERSTANDING of how it should work!

I put all the reds (or browns) together and all the blacks (or blues) together then when I switch on the light switch the breaker keeps tripping Why?
