Someone gave me Michael Caine's biography at Christmas , not my usual reading TBH , name dropping etc , but one bit brought a lump to the throat . His father , a Billingsgate fish market labourer , was in hospital , dying in some agony , Caine asked the Doc to give him an overdose . The Doc just said "Why don't you come back later tonight " When he did his Dad whispered " Good luck son " & passed on . Caine found later that after a lifetimes hard labour on the market his Dad had 3 /-8 d (3 shillings & eightpence) old money to his name . ( Approx. 28 pence Metric)
