How do I know whether the short circuit capacity of a BS3036 is 1kA or 2kA? (I know the 4 kA types aren't available in lower current sizes).

The winter 08 issue of wiring matters has a bit about BS3036

http://www.theiet.org/publishing/wiring-regulations/mag/

e.g.

S1A devices are 1KA. in sizes 5,15,20,30,45, & 60A

S2A devices are 2kA. in sizes 5,15,20,30,45, 60 & 100A

S4A devices are 4kA. in sizes 30,45, 60 & 100A

but it don't say how to identify what type you have!

This is problem with 3036 fuses they have no markings as to catagory on them. I had look on wylex site and there is less information available about them. I think you would need to ring Wylex technical to find out. I personally would imagine they are 1ka as I have seen what happens to them when you have a short circuit. I would think the 2ka ones are more your ceramic ones like mem type. The 4ka type is your industrial switch fuses. But I am probably barking up the wrong tree here.

nope. they have coloured dots to see amp rating (well, rating of what it 'should' be, which is not always where there), but nothing to KA rating
