Does anyone know whats the name of a tool that measures what mm a cable is?.Its only the bigger mains to be honest yes sometimes the size is sometimes on the side of the armoured etc it would be handy thats all?

Vernier calipers, micrometer, or if you are clever you can use 2 hacksaw blades, a nut and bolt and a ruler and a bit of maths ( it is MATHS   And NOT Math as we are English and NOT American!....rant over)

Vernier Caliper and Calculator
Beat me to it as i was being more erudite. .............now that WAS a good epoxy glue!

vernier caliper or more accurate, a micrometer     The answer is diameter so half it to get the radius then it is

Pi x r2

you can do that with a tape measure or drill a hole and see if the cable fits

what will be on the side of the cable will be for eg 4.0mm 3G  which is the core size not the full cable including insulation and sheath

A little too accurate.jpg
10 t -6 is its accuracy not its limit.        depending on the size of the micrometer

The one you have pictured will do just fine for many cable sizes.

If you have a vernier caliper in your shed use that,  if you have a micrometer then use that. It will be more accurate if you do.

Which is not the size of the cable with insulation and sheaf is it?

This is a much duller debate than the  homes under the hammer thread but it seems to keep going. :popcorn

(µ) or 10−6

(µ)  Is the Si symbol for Micro  10−6  is the scientific notation for 1 millionth each are the same value expressed in different ways.

what is your point..........25.000004mm is more accurate than 25mm it is not limited to just reading micro readings  :yawn

My point is that a micrometer is not required to measure SWA as the OP asked. By all means use one if you need to but other means are available that are far quicker to interpret the results.
