Hi,

Mr Inexperienced here again :)

I'm not doing this job, but a colleague is at work, and I don't think he is using the correct cable type really.......

He is running a cable from a DB, along a beam approx 20m, through a brick wall, and then clipped on a metal barrier, then up a 'lamp post' I-Beam to feed two spot lights.

This area is a working yard with regular deliveries on one side of the barrier, and in the future, both sides of the barrier will have traffic.

The barrier looks like this:

Now, he has ordered SY Cable, which obviously won't give the protection that is needed (in my opinion), plus it will go all rusty eventually.

Surely the only real option is SWA?

Thanks a lot

Ryan

Cheers guys.

Andy, how would you get the cable to the new lamp post if going under ground or over isn't an option?

Thanks

It shouldn't ever get hit, but you never know with the drivers that come to our spot.

I had a quick look through the 17th edition before I finished work today, but couldn't find the right section. Could anyone give me any points to where to look please?

Well - its a fair sized book, so, whilst I could give you pointers where to look, I don`t know if I`m pointing you to things YOU are looking for, `cos you haven`t said.

What are you looking for? Is it in the index?

Oh - if you want to get a cable somewhere, and you can`t go underground or overground, then magic (or wombling free) are probably the only options mate.

Without ploughing through the BRB I'd say that the purpose of the barrier is to be hit by vehicles , serious damage to said barrier could rupture the cable presenting a danger to life . And SY cable is not the best choice, should have gone to Specsavers and got SWA.!!!

You may need to think about "protection" for the barrier IYKWIM...

In the case of an incident and the cable being damaged and ruptured think of the consequences as it is a metallic conductor.

Whilst I would not like to use the barrier, sometimes you would have no other option.

Agree on the SWA bit too, SY is not a "formally" recognised cable type for fixed wiring.

If terminated correctly it should not go rusty, you will need to think carefully about the terminations of the SY also with respect to its construction and the installation method.

Idle thought (vet, not a spark remember) but how about SWA at floor level clipped down adjacent to the barrier supports? That way it would be almost impossible to run the cable over and even major damage to the crash barrier would leave the cable unharmed?

Looking at the picture I fail to see why underground is not an option, other than someone won't pay for it.

Edit ok , that was just a pic of the type of barrier not not actual site:red card
