Do you need to issue electrical Minor Works certs when replacing CH programmers/stats (and associated wiring if necessary)? My boss says no but I think maybe we should. Anyone know for definate?

Thanks

Richard

Hi Hooner,

Nice one for taking the advice and coming onto this forum. Screwfix is no good for getting serious answers but on here its different.

No question is a silly question and everyone is helpful.

So welcome to the forum mate

Aha, you've seen my posts on there (and getting nowhere) :) SFix about a year ago just deteriorated into loads of ****ging off so i left.

I haven't really had the need to use SFix forums for ages now but due to a job change into the heating side of things I'll be on here more and more.

My new boss likes throwing us into the deep end without the necessary training. He's like "you're a spark - SO GET ON WITH IT!!) Ha.

And no, i don't know him personally but seen his addy on SFix (i seem to recall)

Richard

Yeah zee we dont know eachother i just saw him getting nowhere fast on screwfix so recommended this place as everyone is really helpful.

Replacement of one control for another (eg to fix a fault) no MWC required.

Any new wiring or the addition of a new control (eg adding a roomstat) then an MWC would be required and the work is notifiable to LABC under Part P (See App Doc P, under General Guidance, Additional Notes, item n on pages 8 & 9).

If you completely rewire a CH system (eg new boiler and conversion from gravity to fully pumped) then a certificate is required. In this instance it is debatable whether the cert should be an EIC (new sub circuit from FCU out) or MWC (sub circuit added to ring). I'm in the latter camp.

Of couse, you cannot test IR at 500V due to risking damage to PCBs etc. Neither can you measure R1+R2 due to needing the system to be live to switch relays etc. So, measure IR at 250V and measure R2 at all points (from the earth at the FCUor wiring centre) and check Zs at the FCU or wiring centre. Record these on your cert with notes about the limitations.

Note that if you are doing the wiring for a new boiler install, then there is no need to notify via your scheme. This is because the boiler install is notifiable (which the plumber will do) and this notification includes associated electrics.

Cheers all. I'll give the gaffer the good news. If he don't like, he can ring NICeic himself.

Richard

as KME says - heating controls are notifiable.

if its changing like for like, then just go ahead with it. if it involves any alteration, then it will require MWC or EIC (where necessary)

Sorry to drag this one back up but if my company give instructions to their engineers that testing and certification is not required for programmer swaps/minor alterations (wire swapping at wiring centre to take wired stats out of circuit etc) then who is accountable if the shti hits the fan? My understanding of EWR regs is that I would be responsible for my actions regardless of company policy (but i may be wrong). I should also note that all tools & testers used must be provided by the company and we are not issued with RCD testers.

Any thoughts?
