Hi All,

I have a Protek DU fitted with a 63A 30mA RCD which annoyingly trips a few times a week without any of the mcb's tripping.

Would replacing with a less sensitive 100A solve my problem and if so can anyone recommend one that will fit into my DU without breaking the bank??

The 30mA is there for a reason so dont change it for a 100mA. What circuits are covered by the tripping rcd. Could be a faulty appliance like your fridge.

Its tripping because it should (unless its faulty) but you need to check the rcd first then find whats causing the trip.

Are you an electrician with test equipment?

Welcome to the forum. I may sound a little blunt here, but I am very concerned by these questions. An RCD should trip without tripping any MCB's. Two completely different types of fault, overload and earth leakage. 63A and 100A is nothing to do with sensitivity, it is to do with the maximum demand of the installation. I would suggest you get an electrician to find the fault that is causing the RCD to trip. It sounds to me as though it is doing its job correctly and you have a faulty appliance or cable fault somewhere. An electrician with an RCD tester will be able to confirm that the RCD is working correctly and then proceed with tests on the circuits. The questions you have asked show a limited level of electrical knowledge, are you a DIY, or student. I would not recommend any unskilled person to proceed with changing an RCD or any component in a fuse box without appropriate test equipment. I hope you understand my reasoning.

Your RCD is not tripping to annoy you. This is it's way of communicating to you that there is a fault which requires rectification (quite possibly an intermittant fault, which may prove hard to trace).

Call an electrician.

If you're in the North Warks area, you could call myself. There are other members on here in the general area too. try the "find an electrician" section.

It is possible it is a faulty RCD they can go faulty but more likely you have a fault thats causing it to trip. You really need to get an electrician with test equipment to test installation to find what problem is. By changing RCD you will probably find the new one will still trip as that it is what it is designed to do if there is a fault and welcome to the forum.

When you do call your electrician in, it is worth having a think in advance about when the RCD trips. Is it the same time each evening? Does it tent to happen while the washing is on? Is it always raining when it happens?

There may be no pattern to when it happens, but if do notice one, it can really help with fault finding.

It is possible the RCD is faulty (and I would test this first as it's relatively easy to do), but I would say that in 9 cases out of 10 like this the RCD is doing it's job correctly and detecting a fault.

As has been said its 90%+ most probable that the RCD is good and you have some latent fault to identify and clear.

From your OP you don't sound very electrically experienced so may be best to get an electrician to come and check a few things out..

Where are you?

This link i've attached will give you an insight on how they work and the reason that you should call an electrician in to check this out for you.

The RCD is fitted in the board for you own and familys saftey so under no circumstances should you change it for doing what is ment to do.
