NO..it all depends on the type of lights..

arrangement of the building etc..

Anyway it is AT the rose where many DIYers mess up their wires..

buy new light fitting.

Undo all wires take down old one..

Go to put up new fitting.. BUT..

find they have three cables.. all Brown+Blue (or Red+Black old money)

{no twin browns or brown sleeved blue's!}

So just join all Browns into live connector of new lamp

Join all Blues into neutral connector of new lamp

Re secure light

Switch on...

BANG!

direct short across supply! :_| :p
I see Mr Location :D

The red 'bang' really hit home. :)

When I have changed light fittings I always note where everything goes. I hate 2 way lighting also! (I even found an earth for me kitchen light when the old one wasn't connected as class 2 :) )

what about 2 way + intermediate, with over-ride switching?

the 2 ways keep me thinking! So many wires, so little space.

getting all those sodding earths into the same terminal - grr. As you push the sleeve moves not the wire. X(

All balanced on a chair at the top of the stairs, with crap falling in my eyes and no blood left in my arms.

:)

just hook it up to the mains - through an RCD plug if you've not got one on your CU. Worse case it will trip.
If testing a lighting circuit via a 13A plug-in socket test arrangement..

even with an RCD...

It can go BANG..

{see recent posts! ;) }

Dead short... RCD still balanced!

this time we are shorting the 13plug top fuse...

a bit more juice to pop.. :(

assuming not using 5A lighting flex..

in which case maybe melting flex? :| :_|

IMHO 2-way doesn't need to have more wires at the light fitting..

just at the switches...

far better place for them.

All these 'bangs' will serve as a form of negative reinforcement encouraging the OP to get things right next time..............

balanced on a chair? are you sure the position of the switch meets disability heights?! (or even reasonable heights?!)

now if you went to change a light fitting you wouldn't move them to the switches, would you?

You'd just swap for what was there?

(I see different if wiring from scratch)

leave cables in place, but as specs, in a 2 way you normally have the same wiring at the light

I meant the ceiling rose at the top of the stairs. Moved into new house, went to change lamp for a low energy jobby and the lampholder was held together with sellotape...........
