Depends how much you are going to use them. The worst thing you can do is try to clip a dogs nails with blunt clippers - it will hurt, the dog will resent it and it will be harder next time.

Personally I like the following style and it's what we use at the surgery. You can pay more or less for them but even a cheap pair will do infrequent home nail clipping for a couple of years for

 
The claw material has no nerve endings so just like your nails you can cut them all you want.

If you cut so short and make them bleed they will often pull away as you have reached sensitive tissue.

If you use blunt clippers [or an inappropriately small clipper for a big dog] you will partially crush the nail and that is painful.

Don't be frightened of giving it a go. I still make them bleed from time to time.
