stupid bloody DST.
Apparently a quote from an American Indian on the subject of DST:

"Only the white man could cut a piece off the top of a blanket, sew it on the bottom, and believe that he has a longer blanket."

1968 to 1971-the clocks were left on GMT
They weren't left on GMT, but on GMT + 1 hour. The clocks were advanced from GMT to BST near the beginning of 1968 (in February, a month or so earlier than usual), then remained on that same time until reverting to GMT again at the end of October 1971.

At one point during World War II there was also Double British Summer Time, when clocks were 2 hours ahead of GMT.
