Hi,

I've got a communial tv aerial up on the roof which someone has messed up and now I've got no signal and neither has eveyone else who hasnt got sky.

I've been up there and tried to redo the connections making sure the shield is not touching the inner core but had no joy.

I'm just wondering whether I could run some fp100 into an f connector and run it into spare way on my mates sky dish. Spare way meaning the LNB ports where 2 has been used and there are 2 spare.

I know nothing about tv signal sky etc and just wondered if this would work?

Thanks in advance

matt

^ what he said

with added 'oya w****r sort out what you broke'

I think it's the original aerial from when block was built in 74. the idiot cut the coax so it's been repaired with aerial connectors but still no signal. Was going the buy one of them cheap signal finder meters from screwfix for 15 quid. Are they rubbish? If I used one of them where it's been joined on the roof it'll tell me if it's the aerial or somewhere on the cable further along? Any thought or pointers

Cheers

Does it have a mast head amplifier??if it does could someone have disconnected the PSU?
Not sure it's got a black box where the coax joins the aerial and that looks intact. I'll take pictures tomorrow if I can get back up there. It's wired to boxes which split up five ways each to different flats. What's a psu mate? Tbh I know nothing about aerials apart from how to do a coax connection

cheers

A mast head amp takes the signal from the areial and splits it out to different points.

The PSU (power supply unit) has a coax thru plug / socket on it and a mains plug.. it sends the power back up the coax to the mast head amp.

If you can connect one of these connectors it would tell you if you had a signal, shop around you can buy these for

have you given your building maintenance company / owner a ring... You never know they might sort it for you?
Good idea but waste of time I've been in legal dispute with them since I moved in in 2001. They're not interested just want to charge money and do nothing at all for it. Got damp probs and they're not interested. If anything needs doing round here you gotta do it yourself. Thanks again for all the help and advice given on this thread. Cheers

Hi,

Ive been looking at aerials as im getting grief off the mrs now not having any tv. I know absolutely nothing about aerials and have never had any dealings with this before.

1) Ive looked at this aerial, do you recon it will be ok?

http://www.toolstation.com/shop/Electrical/TV+Satellite/High+Gain+Digital+Aerial+52+Element/d190/sd3084/p16523

And i understand that its best to avoid the cheap coax cable and go for something with a decent shield (as the stuff ive used indoors in the past has a really rubbish shield being about ten strands)

2) What does 75 OHM mean with regards to coax cable?

3) Whats the difference between standard coax, tv/satellite cable (RG6) and TV/Satellite (CT100)?

4) Can anyone recommend a good signal finder meter which is cheap if I need one. I think it would be handy to have one in case I was asked in future to sort someones aerial out. Thanks

If anyone knows of a good website with information on this sort of stuff it would be greatly appreciated

Thats enough questions for now but will prob think of some more soon. Any advice is appreciated.

Cheers

Very much depends on distance to TV transmitter, local terrain and other objects between you and the transmitter

Very true, the extra cost is worth it

2) What does 75 OHM mean with regards to coax cable?
resistance for coax csa, much as 1.5 and 2.5 T&E has a given resistance per metre

3) Whats the difference between standard coax, tv/satellite cable (RG6) and TV/Satellite (CT100)?
Double shield, with foam filled offering better protection from kinks and water penetration

well I'd go for this, does Sat too http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/FRINGE-Pro-TV-Sat-Signal-Finder-two-one-meter-/300412262255?pt=UK_ConEle_SatCableFreeview_RL#ht_1162wt_911

or if the above is too rich http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/FREEVIEW-DIGITAL-TV-AERIAL-SIGNAL-FINDER-METER-DVB-T-/270614702181?pt=UK_ConElec_TVAerials_RL#ht_3298wt_1137

It's not really that complicated, never found one worth mentioning, but have a search on google

i have that meter and have to say for tv aerial installs, and sat dish alignment its a god send, v v good kit, and it isnt a costly unit for how accurate it is.
