If its all on one circuit I see no problem with the method you describe, that is what would happen if for instance you use gregs. You could wire the switches with a common live, thus removing the need for two cables to be taken to each switch. This reduces the overall cable required for the single circuit lighting.
AS LONG AS IT'S ACCESSIBLE!

I'm going off to rip up floorboards tomorrow to do what would take literally 2 seconds if the switch line/feed were in the rose.

And the job is to do?

the lights in the extension can only be turned on when the light in the living room is on.

If it was all in the rose it would be a simple job of moving the wire.

We ended up finding the mysterious central junction box after lifting up the floorboards in the landing and had to run a new wire in to extend the extension light feed.

So basically we had to do what the electrician who fitted couldn't be bothered to.

This job put me off the idea of centralising the feed.

I hate picking up lazy peoples work. No need for it. I can not believe the client let the old spark get away with that to be honest.

If you have a large number of branches to switch in one location then the line at switch method allows much less wire to be used and saves cramming all those extra wires into the box but in most domestic settings (especially at build/rewire) its not likely to save much and, as you describe, can lead to future issues/problems.

How did you find the JB?

It was mainly process of elimination as we followed the wire back to the switch. When it wasn't at the switch we carried on following until we found it.

luckily enough all these floorboards needed to be up anyway to run the new wire in.
