So, Mrs PD has got herself a Samsung Galaxy S GT-19000

Yes an old second hand cast off from her sister, but it's a bit more modern than the steam powered Nokia it replaced.

So, it has a USB socket.  USB = UNIVERSAL serial bus.

So it MUST be easy to connect it to a PC, so you can upload for instance pictures you have taken, or download music to it shouldn't it?

Well it would appear not.

The PC says something like the USB device is not recognised or not working.

A little googling finds I am supposed to downlad and run a program called Samsung Kies to talk to the phone. But then goes on to tell me I need half a gigibyte of spare HDD capacity. So what sort of bloatware is that?

Then I found some instructions that would let the internal storage appear as a HDD to the PC it's connected to. Horray that sounds like what I want, but trying to follow the instructions, and the menu's on the phone they were using were different to the phone we have so just led to a dead end with the options we need not being there.

Any help please?

On the very rare occasion that I have tried to install and use kies the computer said 'no'

and tbh I can't be bothered messing with it that much ad my phone works and I use a radio for music

Well after a complete power down and re boot of the phone, it now works.

Just another bit of rubbish software that works when it feels like it, and needs regular hard re boots by the sounds of it.

At least we don't have to loaf half a gigabyte of extra bloat to get to access the files on it.

Connecting my Samsung phone via USB then on the phone I get 3 options come up:

- Media Player

- Samsung Kies

- Mass Storage

Select Mass Storage and it appears as an external device. Don't bother with Kies as don't like it tbh.

You can select what the USB does. you have it set as "select on connection" or whatever the exact wording is.

That's the setup bit that confused me. All  the internet setup examples said under "settings / wireless and network" you will find the USB settings.

But there's no USB options there on my phone.  Instead, after MUCH searching of the menu's, I find the USB settings are under phone settings or somewhere equally non intuitive.

But my biggest problem was the first two tries on both computers said the USB device was not working.  well I guess that was correct, because after a hard re boot, next attempt it works.

- Menu

- Settings

- PC Connections

then you get options

- Samsung Kies

- Media Player

- Mass Storage

-  Ask on connection (which is what mine's on)

I have various Samsung devices and only get Kies to work 10% of the time so never use.

I recommend  'Dropbox' and 'Evernote' apps which i believe are cloud based so they auto sync with any device you want. But as i know nowt about computery things dont bother correcting me but have a look for yourself.

LOL thats exactly what I do :)

the other option is to set phone as Bluetooth local hub, assuming your PC / laptop has a suitable aerial. Beyond that totally concur with the above. My phone is an LTC, which gives connection options as soon as you plug into USB port, so setting it as a disk drive is easiest option, other wise it tries updating calenders, e-mails and all sorts of other shite I don't want it to do.

I too just connect via usb & use as an external storage device or use dropbox.

anything like that is instantly seen as external storage on my PC,

Ive never had a problem with anything, [yet]

sony phone

blackberry tablet

htc phone

samsung phone

android tablet

ubuntu tablet

etc etc etc

no iStuff ever tried,,,,,,,,,
