Asked to look at a cooker install this evening for a friend of my mother

Transpires that it's a council flat, so I turn up and find that a cooker outlet plate is in place, however the cooker switch/socket is right above where the hob would be, so I explain that this is not suitable and does not meet the regs so I can't install the cooker, and since moving this would involve a lot of work as I can't see an easy solution to this one (sink next to cooker), he best get hold of the council to sort it out

Now am I being difficult (my mother thinks so) in refusing to install since this is an old install, was this ever a safe installation?

BTW previously this was a gas cooker so the socket has never been used

I'm no spark but I've seen this a few times - both my grandparents and my GF's parents have there switch over the cooker.

Just connect it! It's not notifiable. I can legally go and do it for you..........

:D

There is no wiring reg that says you cannot have the switch there..

Building regs suggest it is best to have them 300mm minimum to the side...

And the regs are not a STATUTORY document so legally you can connect it...

or even Patch can come round and do it...

If it was a rewire or new installation I would say that is bad design and shows cra9 electrician.

but existing like for like swap or appliance replacement you have to work with what you got and a bit of common sense and maybe inform the customer of any potential hazards that exist. ;)
