Core Drill

Hi, I need a core drill any advice on what to buy and what core's sets do you consider to be the best.

If you do a lot I am biased towards the HIlti, though I do use two Metabo's, cores are never ever as good as they say, but I would opt for a set that you can afford.

You pay a lot of money for a good set.

I used to use my sds drill, wouldn't recommend it, it knackered it!

I then bought an old makita from ebay, they still sell them new, quite small but very very good.

This is it new. I paid £120 second hand

Well I have a Makita core drill 110V...the one with a huge side handle and a really good clutch. A good clutch is a life saver...really!

As for drills, I buy complete sets from Aldi or such like. Usually about £50 for a set of about 4 or 5...good enough for the money

not much use if you have lots of holes to make. better makes cut much better and take less time. in some cases, a lot less time

I agree but, for the amount that I use them they are fine. If lots of holes are required then somebody else drills them

I`ve got the makita 8406 as above - bought new, with a set from my local specialist tool stockist - paid full price for the drill, got the 5 set core bits, hex and sds arbors (long and short), pilot, drift and summat else - in flight case on wheels - whole lot = £ 445 inc vat ( approx 2 yrs ago)

I`ve replaced the 4" - and bought a 6" - but everything else still doing well........

2nd the comment about a clutch - I remember first off using a kango - nearly took my arm off!!!!!

Agree with above, we have a 'proper' Makita core drill with a long handle & clutch. When buying kits make sure they are good for your use and not plumbers sizes.

Ive broke my wrist twice, and my thumb about half a dozen times,

NEVER EVER use a core drill without a clutch,

I hate doing them now, even with a clutch it really doesnt take much to snap my thumb/wrist again, I broke my thumb again last year with a clutched machine.

although, I have had a few other wrist/thumb breaks also that werent attributed to core drills, so perhaps its now so much weakened it wont hold to much these days.

No good breaking your wrist for the sake of not having a clutch.

I have two 8406 core drills, one is new and is for core drilling the other has the clutch tightened down more than normal so that I can use it to drill timbers. Excellent for doing so I might add, if you are aware and can make good judgement calls as to where the nails are then it can't be beaten for drill timbers, especially with one of those new Bosch bits.

I think the standard 8406 for core drilling is fine if you vent the dust regularly, don't try to force it let the bit do the work.
