What a joke, the last few days they have been on TV reassuring us that they have good stock piles of salt, grit etc and it will not be as bad as last year

The weathermen have been warning of heavy snow in parts of Surrey for days

Result no gritting before the snow, my road has been in grid lock since 13:00 and at 21:00 cars are still stuck in a mile long cue, it has never been this bad before

It's not just the fact that the roads aren't gritted, there's also the fact that car drivers don't know how to drive in snow, the tyres aren't changed for winter ones and no one uses chains.

problem is, main roads round here are now clear, but the side roads are bad. if you did use chains, then by the time you get to main road, you have to take them off again.

many years ago during a freak snow storm [don't get much here on the coast] the Council went to get the 3 snow ploughs out...

#1 in bits for maintenance [why not do it in the summer]

#2 dissolved into a pile of rust

#3 this is the best one. they had loaned it to somebody and could not remember who: bad day explode

they never did get it back

On call this evening. Been out to see a cow on snowy, icy roads. Caught up to a gritter with a snow plough on, amber lights flashing. He wasn't ploughing OR gritting.

Even if he's run out of grit he could have pushed the actual snow to the sides!

Possibly a polish driver or maybe a 5 day wonder, new at the job not knowing what to do, no training and no map ? :C

He was heading in the direction of the depo and he could have been empty, but he could have put the plough down and done something with the snow.

a week into the snow and i saw the first gritter today. although it looks like they have been gritting a few main routes the last few days.

what really is pointless, ive never seen any gritters actually use the plough. all they do is grit. so more grit is needed to melt all the snow, instead of moving the snow to the side and gritting whats left.

These vehicles aren't just used for gritting in the winter. They are also used (with the gritter container removed) on jobs - usually maintenance - in through the rest of the year too.

So, to have two lorries all rusted up too, is extremely bad maintenance, unless they were actually only gritter lorries. (not that that is an excuse).

But they only plough out some of the minor routes only gritting the 'major' routes. So it's common to have icy ploughed, ungritted roads.

Didn't bother me as driving through snow is much easier for me than on ice, but not for some lower slung cars!

First week of bad weather last winter council managed to write off one of the two gritters, it slid down a bank and hit the wall at the bottom. So they had 2 reserved gritter trailers that were kept for standby use. The type pulled by a tractor and PTO driven. The first was rusted through, the second seized up. Neither had been touch for 3 years as they were only standby units. Lot of just snow ploughing last winter......

Still think the world is just going thru natural weather phases/patterns...

You'll never get rid of, or be able to disprove anything now..... As many governments have found a Tax money spinner,...and they have only JUST started milking it!!

Watch what happens over the next few years and see increases and yet more new taxes based purely on this so called global warming, ....and what the Anorak's bleat!!!!

30 years ago, it was - the icecaps were getting larger, the winters were getting harder & colder, there was a lot of talk of another ice age......

Now its getting warmer - 30 years it`ll be full circle, except there`ll be a "fridge tax" next time..........
