OK asking this at the risk of being ridiculed, so please don't be nasty.

Doing a job for a V good friend (who I also owe one to) which will be a total non payer except for a dinner and a beer. So done the cable calcs for a supply to an outbuilding (40m from house) and I have worked it out as a 10mm2 SWA cable. So far so good.

The question is I have a spare drum of 100 meters 6mm2 SWA, is it such a bad thing to do a double run of cable, then I would double my current carrying capacity for 6mm2 and 1/2 my Volts Drop. This would save buying 10mm2 SWA. It sounds good to me but what does everyone else think?

Cheers Steve

See no problem as BRB allows it ( Page 75 433.4 )

nothing wrong with doubling up on conductors.

at least with your method if one cable fails, you still have a spare (at reduced capacity, but better than none)

Only cowboyish if you don't put adequate protective measures for your parallel conductors...

e.g. one protective device for both conductors or one protective device for each individual parallel conductor.

In your case I would assume one for both is good..

But for your own benefit and to back up what you are doing also read Appendix 10 BRB staring on pages 353 - 355.

you can then show to your mate what a super knowledgeable spark you are doing everything by the book with no corners cut!!!!

thats worth 2 beers not 1!!!

this is done as a matter of course for bigger cables to allow ease of installation. get it done

Thanks Gents

Sparkytim, How come I have never seen that in the BRB before, just read 433.4, that will do nicely.

SL, Yip I intend to use one MCB to protect both cables.

Lee, Yip again, done it a few times in industry, just not seen it done in a domestic situation, just wondering if it was one of those things that was OK but frowned upon, but sounds like all is good.

Thanks again for all the replies Steve
