Creda Storage Heaters - Not Enough

Hi all,

Can I ask for your expert advice please?

I have two Creda storage heaters in my flat. A Creda 79162 and 79163. They both run off an economy 7 timer. When I moved into the flat 7 years ago, the heaters were very very hot. They (both) now do not provide enough heat. I have had an electrician look at the heaters a number of times. He tested and changed a number of the elements but the heaters are still luke warm. He has also tried running the heaters direct off the mains and can find no fault. He has tried his best but does not know what the problem is. He has suggested changing the thermostats but this is an expensive repair when he is not sure if this will fix the problem.

I have had the economy seven timer changed and it is working. I have noticed however that the heaters begin charging when the economy meter kicks in but slow down to a trickle charge at some point during the night. Has anyone got any experience with this type of heater and/or problem and/or offer any advice please?

The storage heaters will start to cycle after a few hours and depending on what level of input you are asking for.
In the morning if you run your hand across the front is the heat even or can you feel an area hotter or cooler, indicating on the cooler part the element has gone.
When I change elements I change them all because if one has failed the rest will follow.

The input stat normally fails shut this allows the unit to overheat and shut down completely and not come on again.
If its working it does not sound like the stat.

Thats interesting , as you remember that were once hotter ,  A sparks coming to look at them would think they were OK . 

I can only think of two things..... the thermostats are restricting the input or the time switch is not giving you a full 7 hours at off peak.

We've just had two seperate customers with heaters only getting hot at the top half  when the customer remembers them being hot all the way down.

All elements working and drawing full current .

These were Creda also .

The heaters have an even spread of heat across them but they are just not storing enough heat, I can't work out why. The elements have been tested and are ok and when the electrician ran the heaters off the mains for about 4 hours, the cover connected to the thermostat did not close but when I checked the meter, the charge had slowed down. I have since had the meter changed and this is not solve the problem.

I am worried about changing the thermostats as this is expensive and doesn't appear to be a guaranteed fix. Is this likely to be the problem in your view?

Ah    If the cover inside the top is stuck open or just not closing , you would be losing a lot of the stored heat during the charge period . 

This makes me think the mechanical  thermostat is :- (a) Set to open the flap & needs turning down or (b)  its buggered and needs replacing . © The flap is stuck open .
