Hello lovely electrician forum people.  I have a De Dietrich oven that stopped working yesterday - it suddenly started tripping the RCD as soon as it was switched on.  My husband has cleverly identified that it's the thermal cut out that's causing the problem, has removed the part and promised to order a new one today.  My question is, would there be any way to continue using the oven while the new part is on order?  Eg can he do something with the wires maybe to get it going again?  Thanks in advance (hoping to cook a chicken later) ... Helen

Ooooohhhh.........tall order.

You may have to stand over the oven while it cooks and turn

it on and off.

I did wonder about one of those plug in timers that you can buy

but the time control tends to be in 15 minute chunks.  When the

stat is connected, the oven is being turned off and on at minute

intervals (approximately)

How about pot roasting it on the stove top?  And just turn it in the

pot?  That is what I would do.

Thing is...once that stat is out and you get it going, I stand to be

corrected but there might not be any other means of control. There

may be another cut-out that requires a manual reset but I am not

awfully familiar with this animal.

Hi and thanks for the replies.  The conclusion at the moment is that we've no idea what's going on with it!  When he removed the thermal cut out the oven would switch on (without blowing the RCD) but obviously not heat up.  When he connected the two wires to bypass the cut out the RCD flipped out again.  He then isolated each element as far as possible and it turned out to be the grill that seemed to be the problem, but that all looked a bit too complicated so we booked a 'pro' to come and have a look at it, wired it all back up, accidentally left it switched on when we plugged it back in and, guess what, it decided to work just fine.

I can only think that the grill element had a bit of a loose connection and fingers crossed the problem is now resolved.  If it works over the weekend we're going to cancel the call out and hope for the best.  Although of course I'm fully aware that if anything's going to crop up again it'll be on Christmas Day morning.  Ho ho ho!!

Thanks again anyway for your input guys, and Merry Christmas to all.

Elements are funny things sometimes the insulation is broken down so they will trip straight out and other times the insulation will break down on heating up so they may be OK until used.
