Clutching at straws really, my wifes laptop, a HP dv6 1210sa pavilion has decided it doesnt want to boot up any more. It comes on with the fan sound and the caps lock and num lock LEDs flashing constantly. I have removed the battery and done a hard reset as well as removing the RAM etc with no avail. Anyone got any sensible ideas and if its dead can I save the files on the HDD somehow?

Thanking you in anticipation

James

If you cannot get the laptop working again, search somewhere like amazon for a sata enclosure. You will then need to strip the hdd out of the laptop and put it in the enclosure and then into a replacement computer or laptop.

Thanks chaps, I wanted to get a HDD dock and scoured the local shops to no avail, then I went to the computer service centre and the bloke said 'we don't sell them but we have one we use, You seem like a decent bloke so you can borrow it" well I nearly fell over.... so borrowed it and successfully managed to recover some 119 GB of data - mainly photos.

Yes, thanks sidey. all seems to be alive and well. I may have another play around with the laptop and try sand save it but at least all the data is safe. If its definitely dead then I need to replace it. Trouble is the Mrs wants one with win 7 - refuses to learn new technology! so need to find one which has win 7 if you can still get them. On the plus side probably cheaper?

You can still get Win7 on a lappy.

I'l PM. You the supplier I have used for 11 laptops now & every time good service and a fair price.
