I have a few stablock 415 three phase breakers collecting dust, some really old mem and some not so old stuff.

I will have a good clearout and let you know what I have.

I still save old breakers in case I need them but so far never have :)

I used to keep my old mcbs, but never really needed them

About 3 years ago i found myself always needing the old federal ones but dont really get the call nowadays

If i come across a board that is now obselet, i generally find that its not up to scratch anyway, and changing the board is a much better option

I did this recently with an old federal board, I thought that the news items I had read involved all boards. I recently found out from mcbfinder that it was just the American versions and not the UK.

So I replaced a good board at great expense to the client for nothing really, just mis-information.

Are you sure thats right. Greeny ?
I'm confused, I don;t follow this bit?

I thought Federal went bust a while back and the MCBs (Stablock) are as rare as Rocking Horse Poo.
They are. I've got some in the shed I might get round to shifting.

Greeny refers to Federal and says "only American ones being obselete" , which confused me . :C
I see. I don;t think he mentions anything about being obsolete, he was referring to all the press articles about the Stablok range being somewhat dangerous and catching fire. This was referring only to the US market though, the UK ones have always been fine and still are, even though they are no longer manufactured as you rightly mentioned.

The press releases all filtered across to this side of the pond with no specific mention of them only applying to the US market, hence some people were confused.

Cheers Lurch that is exactly what I meant in my post.

I do sometimes confuse myself :)

Question for mcbfinder or anyone else who knows - is there a way of testing these second hand MCB's to make sure they function or do we just have to blindly trust that they do what they are supposed to?

Would it be a case of testing to destruction? At home our lighting circuit used to trip every time a bulb blew so was used many many times.

Is there some kind of machine you can use?

there is a loadbank you can use, you increase the load until it trips however.....

my personal opinion is that all mcbs in every installation have never been tested and i have argued with nic inspectors that they should bring out a test as part of a periodic. this is usually met with a blank glazed look. how do you know that a 40 amp type c will trip in the designated time with the right curve?

the reality is the mcbs on my shelves are no more likly to be faulty or dangerous than the ones situated in the db. i run this as a service to help out sparkys in need, and do state that should any mcbs be faulty that i will replace or refund without question. all rcds are tested when they are sent out and the times are clearly stated on the side on them.

i will look into buying a loadbank but expect them to be a stupid price running into thousands of pounds.

hth

regards andy at mcbfinder.

ps. fit a c type on your lighting circuit, that will allow for the inrush of a lamp blowing ;)
