Hi guys, I have posted on here a few times about passing my SECTT test and I have contacted employers in my area and any companies that get back to me always say that they won't be taking on any Apprentices now or in future.. so I'm wondering does anyone actually get an apprenticeship? I have been on this list since November and not heard from anyone I really want to become an electrician and have been emailing people but I seem to get nowhere.. has anyone got any advice that would help me find an apprenticeship. I would really appreciate the help thank you.

I have an apprentice.

The downside of lots of trades going self-employed and starting their own businesses is that they often can't be bothered with training a youngster.  I would also review your postings on Facebook, your CV and covering letter.

Hi there thank you for replying. I'm just wanting to get started already I have sent my cv and cover letter along with my emails but always the same response. Can I ask what you mean by reviewing postings on Facebook? Thanks again

potential employers may look on your facebook to see more about you. if its full of drunk ramblings etc its not going to look very good

Facebook shouldn’t be mentioned in a job application, it is a window to your silly/drunken escapades that a prospective employer doesn’t want to see.

Stick to facts in your CV and be prepared to be asked questions about your CV.

The last interview panel I was on, we vetted using facebook.

I realise nearly everyone partied and had wild nights out whilst they were younger. It's part of growing up. Thankfully the internet wasn't around to immortalise many of my past shall we say adventures.

I didn't judge on the drunken photos, but some had actually had statues bragging about skiving work, I mean it's showing some lack of intelligence to a) put that online b) not set your account so that anyone can see it.

I have it to keep in touch with friends who have now moved abroad or away. It is very easy to make it so that no information is show to people you don't want to see it.

tiwtter I can't be bothered with, though it is good for traffic updates from the Police.

FB I got into for business, but I find it very useful for keeping up with family and friends.

Whereabouts in Scotland are you. A number of colleges run pre-apprenticeship courses, and folks completing this have a good success in going on to get apprenticeships.

Ask to speak to one of the Training Officers at SECTT for further advice.

Hi Im in Dundee, I have emailed SECTT about what happens next and they've only said for me to email employers asking about vacancies for any apprenticeships. But any who get back to me always say they aren't taking on now or in future...

Google "pre-apprenticeship electrical courses Scotland". A number of colleges run these often starting in August. Employers will often look for trainees who have successfully completed this course, 'cos it separates the people who have the aptitude & attitude to complete an apprenticeship & those that don't.

Good luck

I have tried to apply for that course in the past but was rejected as I didn't have enough grades so I was wondering if I reapplied would I be able to get in the course now that I have passed the sectt test?

You could forget SECTT and being an electrician, and instead, apply to the alarm companies in your area, for an apprenticeship.

:slap

we all know alarm monkeys are failed plumbers who are failed electricians and then think they are god when they turn up on site after everything is done then string line cables from one side of the room to the other with the odd clip. they must be related to data installers?

As an alarm installer and data cable I resent that remark, but there are a lot of people not helping that image.

I find it frustrating on a lot of sites to get there and find everything finished, I have on many occasions got to a job to fit a/some alarms or do some data cabling and find everything finished, which makes my job harder and the job look terrible. But then on the other hand, I have on other occasions left coils of data cables ready for final fitting and come back to them being damaged but I sort of see why sometimes as a coil of huge bunches of data cables soon starts to get bulky so everyone starts ragging it round site, so you can see why sometimes it is left until the end.
