anyone here?

A Cardiff charity shop mistakenly sold an electrician's £200 tools for just £1 after he left them unattended.

Andrew Bickel, 39, was fixing a faulty light at the Catwel shop in Heath on Thursday as a favour for the cat re-housing charity.

He said he nipped outside to get something from his van and when he returned his tools had been sold.

But, on reading that,

I'd say all he really lost was probably one of those £30 kits with screwdrivers and cutters in a zip up wallet type of thing,

Like when your TV goes bang and you tell the insurance it was the top of the range 50" one, and unit the 22" basic one you really had.

I dunno, there was no mention of insurance claims or any attempt at recovering them so there was no need to inflate the cost. I could quite easily carry £200 worth of tools round in my pockets. Set of CK drivers, pliers and cutters and a Fluke T5 gets you about there.

Not so good a story though if the charity shop sold a £30 tool set for a pound,

£200 worth is more dramatic, and he now has a set of new tools out of it.

So an "electrician" leaves some of his tools unattended in a place where any member of the public could legally walk past and pick them up? and then finds them gone?  Someone sounds a bit naive to me. How hard would it be to just pop them behind the counter and mention to the person on the till you need to go out to your van, so can they keep an eye on them. Whatever happened to common sense?

I'm sure we've all done it at some point. Some sites I used to have to find a hiding place within sight of where I was working so I could stash tools/equipment out of public view while I went back to fetch the rest of the kit to do the job. It was a PITA, I was on my own because we used to get moaned at for having 2 people on the job even though we used to get more than twice as much work done. We don't do work for that customer any more.

Didn't common sense get outlawed when partP was brought in,? :C

Sometimes I think it's best not to think about tool costs, it's scary. A while back I was reading something and there was this tool mentioned, as it happens I have one and it cost about 50 quid, I then started thinking about my toolbox that I use every day. Pliers, cutters, crimpers, screwdrivers, test lamps, proving unit, etc, etc, pretty soon I realised it's worth over a grand! Then there's the other stuff that lives in the boot of my car, I nearly carped myself, there's easily 2 or 3 grands worth, and that's on a normal day, throw in the special test gear and it gets scary, one case alone would cost about 1500 quid to replace. When I was on a long term contract, I left a hell of a lot of gear at work, it was all locked up, and covered by their insurance, but lets be honest, unless you had a list you'd never know what went if it got pinched. Just think about that one small bit of kit that you own, you know the one, very small, very expensive and gets used infrequently but lives in a bag in your vehicle. If that went it could be months before you realised it had gone, scary or what!

A few years back I did an audit and had around £15k, worth of kit, I've added to it since, I hate to think how much I own now.

I remember being quoted for tools insurance a good while ago now .

Questioins included :

Do you take your tools onto building sites , factories & commercial premises ?   Yes .

Do you leave tools in an unattended vehicle at any time ?     Yes.

Do you leave tools unattended at any time ?  Yes

Do you work in a large city .?  Yes

That'll be £1000.00  per year please.
