I want to put spot lights in a ceiling, but, the ceiling is artex. Artex contains asbestos doesn't it? So i should avoid drilling yes? I've heard off some people that it doesnt contain much and is ok to drill in small quantities?

Any advice on this would be brilliant.

Thanks,

not always asbestos, but good chance it is. you could always get it checked out to see exactly what it is. IIRC, artex doesnt have a high percentage or asbestos

I agree with what andy has said but would add if its artex is it not a rough finnish?

If so the spots will not sit flush and you will get horrible light leakage from the sides.

Ah damn, good point. Looks like i'll stick to a ceiling rose.

I was told that Artex contains asbestos , I don't know how much, but the worst thing you can do is to drill it and create dust. Recently someone phoned about rewiring their house and said the whole place is Artexed, walls as well and we want everything chased in flush. I turned the job down, although I need the work. The bloke was put out and said it was safe . I think not.

i have a aspestos mask in my van with interchangable filters also a good idea to wear the decorators paper overals.

id have thought it would be better to use disposable - at least it cant then stay on mask in the van to be released elsewhere

i use similar to these and can be washed in warm soapy water after use.

i have never seen a disposable mask that is ok for aspestos.

i did look but found non . :) i still prefer mine though but they do like quite good andy . :)

I think it was pre 1985 artex that caused the problems.I know there's no way of telling the date so its better to be safe than sorry
