Hi,

As you probably know im changing my dads board for Elecsa assessment and have been given an Earth Rod by my dads pal who does lightening conductors. I have attached a picture of the fitting he gave me to attach the MEC to the rod. Is this good?

Ive never dealt with/seen a TT install ever, so your advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

Yes that is the standard earth rod attachment clamp.

It should be labeled like any other clamp etc, but its the right fitting.

Thanks GH so I need to get a "Safety Electrical Connection - Do Not Remove" metal tag from a BS951 clamp and attach it to the fitting?

Thanks

Yes thats what I do, I know its obvious to us its an earth connection, but to others its a bit of metal !!

You can attach it to the cable or take the screw all the way out and attach it to that.

Matty - how do you plan on attaching the wire to that? Thought you usually clamped it between the two nuts

The bolt or screw would come out and the earth would be lugged and connected before fitting to the rod.

The main problem is thet it may need a nut so that it is tight on the clamp and cable.

Or I have done it by clamping a ferrule on the end of the cable and then bolting to the rod and the cable.

My dads pal told me to put the cable (parallel) with the rod and clamp the whole lot together. Thats what he does with the lightening conductors. Do you recon the assessor will be ok with that?

He will want to give it a tug, just to make sure it is secured, so as long as the connection is sound he will be happy.

thats what i did and the asseser was happy, though i did have a plastic cover on top of it.

i think M or noz had sone pic of one they installed, i would do it the same way as the pic

Thanks for the replies guys. Ive got a really stupid question to ask possibly the stupidest question ever but is 6491X the correct cable to use for bonding. Im on the screwfix website and it says 6491x conduit wiring cable. I recon that its used in conduit as well as for bonding? am i right in my assumption? :run

And wheres the best place to buy it as Toolstation only do upto 10mm which is more expensive than screwfix? screwfix do 50m of 10mm for

Matty if you go to your local wholesalers they will set you up on a cash only account, this would give you some discount depending on how much you use, but it would be cheaper than going to screwfix.

If you can wait for delivery then the forum sponsor TLC can work out cheaper.

you put the stripped part of the cable against the rod inside the clamp loop, (opposite side to the screw) then tighten it. No need for a lug. Miles better than the bolt type.

Matty, the clamp you showed is the standard type but is not the strongest. I have cracked quite a few across the pointed bit when tightening up. The piccy Apache showed is better. I also secure the cable to the rod with a couple of good size cable ties.

got to disagree there - i think the type matty has is the better connection. i have snapped the brass bolt in te type patch has linked to a few times. not broken the type matty has yet though
