Hi all, I am looking at getting into doing EICRs and domestic work etc as I have been doing field power supplies for the last 8 years so I am going to do an EICR on a friends apartment for practice.

I have a few questions if you will be kind enough to answer.

1. Extent of cover, within consumer side only (see below)?

2. Agreed limitations, Is it acceptable to only cover the consumer side only due to the rest being accessible to the building owner?

3. Operational limitations, the system has 5 wall mounted heaters run off off-peak power so live tests not possible. Is this acceptable or do I have to run the incoming power into these briefly?

4. General condition, what sort of wording is preferred for a safe installation?

5. Report authorised for issue by, do I use my sole trader name?

6. Earthing arrangement isn't accessible where do I ask? Or do I put n/a if I put consumer side only in limitations?

7. Characteristics of Main switch? Again is that n/a?

8. I am also no good at recognising domestic conductor sizes, I am guessing the supply conductor look 10mm does that sound right?

9. The main circuit breaker is double pole legrand 100 A 400v, there are no other characteristics I can see on the unit itself, where can I find out the short circuit capacity etc?

Any help will be greatly appreciated because as you can see I am very out of touch with domestic testing. However, I do not require an ear bashing by anyone for my surrent lack of knowledge, that's what I'm here for.

Thanks in advance,

Sam.

1/ the flat.

2/ limitations - inaccessible cables not visually inspected etc etc

3/ dead test R1+R2 unless you fancy working at midnight. Do check Ze to that DB, mark as a limitation

4/ magic words include, satisfactory, acceptable, or suitable for purpose

5/ yep

6/ see if you can get access to landlords cupboard ( not usually locked anyway) ideally you should have a look at what is feeding the flat

7/ as above. Should be on Switch fuse isolator at landlord's end

8/ No. Don't guess, go to local wholesaler and ask for a snip of cable off the ends so you have

9/ usually written on the side of casing - look up on internet

Pretty much as binky said mate, take your time, don't guess at anything and always make the report as concise and accurate as you can as it's your name at the bottom

1. I usually put something along the lines of circuits 1-8 (or however many there is) of db1 etc

2. Agreed limitations are things like the percentage of your visual inspection, any circuits that are off limits for acceptable reasons, any inaccessible or concealed cables etc

3. Do your dead tests, check the Ze and then either mark the rest as a limitation or do your Zs by calculation and make sure you state that

4. Installation is in a satisfactory condition etc ( get a copy of gn3 if you haven't already and have a look at the examples in there too)

5. Yeah

6. Don't mark it n/a you should always check and verify the earthing arrangement or how do you know if your readings are any good, get I touch with the landlord if it's locked they should let you in

7. That's its bs or bs en number, number of poles, rated current etc all of that should be on the main switch if not use the BGB, your OSG, gn3 or the internet to look it up

8. Don't guess have a good look and feel, get hold of some off cuts so you can get a feel for each size. Again how do you know if your cables are upto the job if you don't know how big they are

9. Same crack as 7 really you'll find the info in the same places

i remember my first few PIR's and EIC's they took me ages to fill out and the amount of times I pestered the life out of other sparks for answers was unreal but you don't get if you don't ask
