A customer has asked me to install a meter on his granny flat that he rents out so that he can see how much electric is being used without having to go in the flat is there much involved I've not done this type of job before

Check with the local distributor on the

size of the tails and the length that will

have to be fitted. There may be a max.

length that he will permit.

That should be your first action.

i think what the OP is trying to say is he is newly qualified yes, but he has never attempted this kind of job 'in the real world' so to speak!

the only thing i could suggest OP is to perhaps re word your question so that it is more coherant in the answers that you are searching for

i.e i have been asked by a client to install a secondary meter after the installation origin, i am unsure as to how to ................................................................. <insert question here

maybe give some more information on the original installation

i.e TT, TNCS, TNS existing tail size? how far away is the new meter being placed?? and so on

When I read the question, I thought you were talking about a "granny annex" in the sense of part of one property that has been sub divided and you want an independent measurement of the electricity usage in the annex, as opposed to what you have now is the electricity consumption of the whole property.

We need more information to give meaningful answers.

If you mean what I think you mean then TLC (among others) sell them and they work just like any other electric meter.

I think what hes looking for is a GSM chip in the meter so he can sit indoors checking his iphone for usage and not have the worry that his rented property is being used for growing purposes of the illegal nature lol :slap

If its wired in with the rest of the house you need to isolate the granny flat wiring and refeed it through a small C/Unit .

Install a sub main to feed same and fit a meter where the client can read it.

40A and 80 A meters can be bought fairly cheaply.

You could get hold of the meters that pv system use. We use a lot of Elster a100c meters if that's any help

yes, if you dont know how to do it then you shouldnt be,

why are you working on your own if you are only recently qualified? is this a foreigner?

being qualified doesnt make you competent.

we need a lot more info, as has been asked, id this simply an annex? is it a completely separate wiring system with its own CU ? etc etc.

As others have said a little more info is required on how the annex is currently wired (does it have it's own cu or is it wired as part of the main buildings installation circuits).

If it is to be a stand alone metered annxex then you need a meter on the supplying submain like so.

Split the tails at origin meter for submain to annex

Then somewhere along the submain length place your meter (get the connection the right way round)

There are numerous outlets where standard power measuring and pre-payment meters etc, can be purchased. Care must be taken if the meter is to be used for calculating actualy payments for electricity used. If the annex is a piggy-back off the main house supply then there are strict rules about re-selling electricity on. http://www.uregni.gov.uk/uploads/publications/Guidance_for_Resellers_of_Electricity_or_Gas.pdf Calibration of the meter may be required.
