Electric shower isolator - turning off.

probably a daft question and i think i should know:

got asked today why the isolator should be switched off when shower not in use. to be honest i always have turned (pulled) off at isolator, but not sure why.

is there a reason?

Never heard that you should switch isolator off unless its in makers instructions , ours is left on all the time . Its not an operating switch ,and is often fitted outside the room or in the airing cupboard.

Doubtless we will soon know.

save burning out the neon....

dont really think it makes any difference - some people turn it on/off, others just leave it on

but those that are switched on/off all the time will probably fail sooner....

That's why you should fit the Crabtree ones, the neon disconnects for testing when opened up.

I'm a Yorkshireman, I'm not paying for all that electricity to keep the little red light on

If it were me.......

I`d want NOT to have a permanent source of high-current within the enclosure of a unit utilising mains water pressure, when not in use.

Water pressure can rise dramatically at night; and faults can occur at any time.

So I suggest they`re turned OFF except when preparing for use.

cooker, imersion, shower, boiler, all those neons spiriling out of control, i am up for life on the edge but theres a limit and the thought of thoes little bas**eds sat there sucking away, mocking me, it turns my blood cold.

so i will keep my 3-12p and say no thanks to neons

thanks mate i will pm you some bank transfer details a check will cost you a stamp, envelope and ink.

cant guarentee i will get one though, can't have a little smug neon thinking its won.

as for door bell i aint got one, not paying for something fancey for visitors to use and they never appreciate the effort you have gone through to give them an illuminated lazy button, they can blo*dy well knock.

its not the door bell laughing that gets me its the empty stair they give you i try not to look but thats just giving in to door bell preasure but i surpose in the long run its better to not stir things up and avoide confruntation.

now if you excuse me i need to bring the tea bags in off the line if it rains on them again they will be no good.

thats why i was asked, its a student house and been turned off and on alot and failed, so landlord asked can it not just be lefted on. i cant see why not but have personally always turned mine off. one of the students said there dads a sparky and he always has so she always has.like you say sometimes there in cupboards so there never gonna get turned off.

I think we can conclusively prove from reading this thread that majority of competent electricians never read shower manufactures instructions!!!!!!!

I like the remarks you have made about this one. I would

go with Kme on the rising water pressure. Using the C/B

as the sole means of isolation is not really a bright idea.

I think any plumber worth his money would fit one and have

academic arguments about the stop valve behind the shower.
