Hello,

I would like to know if there are worked examples or books which explain step-by-step of how to design an electrical installation. I'm more of a practitioner (but I have the basic knowledge on the subject).

Thanks,

Tom.

There are some books available that show individual examples, there are no really good worked examples because there are so many variables in the design.

The designer is also not restricted by some of the basic diversity examples given in books like the on site guide, because as the designer you can safetly allow a circuit to be " overcharged" for a limited time, and the power factors can change so many times even within an installation.

The best way to learn how to design anything is to look at the basics, and this to an extent is given in most electrical books. Worked examples will show how a circuit is designed, and once you have grasped the fundementals you can progress to bigger multiple circuit designs.

I use computer aided design software, and include them in the handover manual at the end of the job, this shows all the information from the client and the calculations based on the given data.

Houses are not, as a rule, a problem because of the limitations

upon circuit lengths. (part 'P' guidance page 47).

Knowledge on larger installations with longer conductor runs is

best acquired by experience and with a mentor available.

Yes, the basics are essential and this has been said. It is

probably more important to know how to assess and evaluate

the suitability of a circuit/installation that has been in service

and what to do if that evaluation reveals a shortfall in design.

Thanks a lot for all replays,

Lots of reading there this weekend :)
