Anyone into family history or just getting started may be interested that Genes Reunited have free access to the 1911 Census for the next 2 weeks . You'll need to enroll , about £9 year.

Never really understood the fascination of this? It's not like you can pop round to meet up with them, and those that you can you probably already know, if you haven't met them yet then they probably aren't worth meeting.??

What Do people hope to get from this?

To me its an interest in the history of those who went before , a distant relative who left for a new life in America , he sailed on Titanic in 1912 . Baron von Ricthoven attended a family wedding .

An uncle reported killed in action during World War1 , walked in the back door of the family home , unaware that he was dead , he'd been a POW and left to find his own way back .

I find it interesting , I realise some do not .

It doesn't help Patche !! I've done better with my Mom's side which is Phillips , bleedin' Welsh they're everywhere!! :innocent

Another great help :C is previous generations had this thing with naming the children the same as the parents and /or grandparents .

I noticed on the 1911 that a lot of people were listed as " inmates of the Workhouse" a widowed bricklayer in his late 50s who could no longer find work ...workhouse!!

I use Genes Reunited and am quite impressed tbh. Got back to the late 1800's on it with tracing the wife's family and found a long lost great Uncle who died in the Boer War. On my mum's side back to the late 1700's in Ireland (lots of Murphys who were farmers, shepherds etc) but a lot of that was from documentation I got from an American cousin. BUT you can enter all the birth, death and marriage cert info you have from other sources INTO Genes Reunited. Builds up quite a nice tree!
