wonder if the failure is on a line or neutral? or even worse, a PME neutral?

one way to find out would be hammer in a rod, and wire a light between line & rod... obviously this needs to be done with caution.... if it flickers at same time as others, its a line problem. if it doesnt flicker, its a neutral problem

I would never have thought of doing that. Supplyt is TT and they've pretty much agreed its their problem. Once it starts up again i'm going to wander down the road and find out who's affected. Hopefully it might help them track down the location of the fault. For now they've washed their hands of it.

At the minute it looks like its gone as had no problem tonight. I suspect its due to dry calm conditions of late though.

Update:

Had a bout of badly flickering lights tonight when i came in from work. Called the Dno out agin.

He said he'd have to send it to the lines men for investigation during the daylight hours. He then rang it in to the office who said that a problem has been found. The insulators on one of the poles are tracking badly. They are in such a poor condition that he refused to climb the pole.

The repair in now in the system and the whole street will be getting shut down for half a day in the near future.

Yey, looks like we'll be getting flicker free lighting in the near future Result :)

Thanks again for the help

at least its finally getting sorted.

so its so serious that one person refuses to climb the pole to investigate, yet only days before the problem wasnt bad enough to justify further investigation...

the world has gone mad
