I was wondering in the interests of creating a well dressed CU. Is it acceptable to shorten the Earth and Neutral fly leads of an RCBO to a more appropriate length which will of course remove the crimpted ends? :) Or should they be left alone?

Personally I wouldn't want to shorten them cuz if or some reason in the future you wanted to move something around...

you'd be cussing yourself if the wires no longer reach!

:|

bit of careful tucking and folding is the order of the day ;)

I'm sure technically you could shorten them and see no ill effects, it runs along the same lines of the cutting a moulded plug off an appliance, if you send it back regardless of the fault the missing plug\50mm of flying lead will be blamed for the fault.

wow Lurch you were up early. This forum will soon be 7 by 24. We'll have to introduce a shift pattern. Do I get double time for a Sunday? :^O

JD, I actually contacted MK about straightening out and shortening their leads as and when needed. They told me that straightening their fly leads is fine but shortening them is an absolute no no.AndyGuinness
MK Sentry RCBO's are not too bad due to them having a nice curly lead.

Crabtree Starbreaker on the other hand come with enough neutral lead to go around the box half a dozen times:O

I would agree due to the fact that the RCBO operates with imbalances anywhere down the circuit....

And the manufacture don't know how long my circuits are...

or at what point down the circuit the fault will occur!

Length, technically no affect ! IMHO.

just a sod if you want them long again later! :(

A bloke that worked for MK at a talk I went to said it says in the instructions you are not allowed to shorten the leads I looked but could not find it in the instructions but don't cut them off anyway.

Batty

there is no reason they wont work if you shorten te lead, but like moulded plug appliances, they will use that as an excuse as to why it broke (even if the test button fell out and switch wont move, its still because the lead was made shorter!)

Thats why I love this forum!

I have shortened them in the past, but must admit that the last few times I have fitted them I have left them alone.

I had no idea, or had no inclination to ask if this was ok, so thanks to zeesparc for that info
