JL is it true that being a gas engineer is where the money is? Doing boiler servicing, fires that kind of stuff. A friend of mine is a gas engineer and he claims he can make up to

depends what he does really.

heating contracts are generally 600+ a job so 2 guys would pull in 300 a day.

a private job could pull in 500/1000 a day depending on areas etc so yes 400 is achievable very easily.

i had a m8 in milton keynes doing 150k + a year house bashing ..

dont bother every ones a dam plumber lol.. your either busy or got naff all there no middle road m8.

i know loads up here sat on there ass with nothing in the bank

bg are paying 28k + for service engineers..

commercial may get 30+

a general gas man cards in will be on 25k + .

working ur nuts off on heting contracts may get u 40k +

and an early grave .lol..

Must be a good earner in the winter though when everyone fires up the boiler.

no people are using the interent now and know the prices of boilers and are resoursing there own fitters on a day rate.

have a look on ebay typical 6 month plumbers on there doing boiler swops for 999.00 to make just beer money and the new homeserve doing free boilers for over 60`s and people on the dole etc.

there is very little money now in plumbing ..... why do u think i am doing more electrical work its not because i like running up and down stairs with coils of 10mm twin in my arms lol.

no offense JL, but that just goes to show how easy it is for a plumber to be allowed (part p) to do electrical work - it would be much harder if i tried to do gas work because there wasnt enough electrical!

i agree m8, although i have done electrical for many years and doingthe part p was just the next step to comply for me.

i am a big believer in education and strive to be the best i can be at anything i do !

although you cant be corgi in a week like the part p it can be done in 6 months which is far less than the 4 years i did ..

as for part p being a danger i for 1 stand by you 100 % ...and think the fast track eal courses are an invasion into the trade.

remember though i am not ur typical part p 5 day wonder though, 1 work with an electrician every day he either labours for me on gas or i labour for him on electrics.

so you could say i am apprentise trained,

most guys do the course and buy a van then out they go into the big wide world,

i did a 15 year apprentiship before sitting the eal course lol..so feel i earned my wings :)

just thought i would add, how many 5 day wonders do you see doing there 2391 just to improve there knowledge in the field.

answers on a postcard. :)

So if you had you time again and you could only choose 1, plumbing or electrics, which would it be?

i always wanted to be an electrician so i would say electrician if pushed,

its rarely greener on the other side of the fence lol.

and on a general day to day both earn the same money for a days work, although there are exeptions though on both sides. :)

Probably the best thing to say on an electricians forum:)

when i applied at the council, there was a list of trades. it said mark your first choice as 1, second choice as 2. in the interview i got asked why i didnt make a second choice. i thought it was fairly obvious... if i want to be an electrician, i aint gonna take a plumbing course from you!

hehe as you get to know me tim you will soon find out that i say as i think and it often gets me in hot water.

but the guys on here all flex there muscles and put me in my place. :)

This is why he is running up and down the stairs with coils of 10mm cable in his arms. He's too tight (being a plumber) to join and go to a gym. And he wants to defend himself from the sparks of this 'ere forum.

:D

My best mate who I have know all my life is Gas... and I can tell you for a fact there is more regular work doing gas (thanks to legislation) - No one does their own gas, landlords certificates, energy grants, etc.

Plus his hourly/day rate is higher - people believe working on domestic gas is more specialised, needs more training, need more tools. When in fact its like domestic electrics, quite simple. For most things its always the same thing - same size pipes, same flue sizes, a quick look around for required ventilation, a simple pressure and leakage test - His most advanced peice of test equipment is a plastic manometer!

Its only when you get to Commerical/Industrial it becomes more fun and challenging :)

But hey ho...

O.

ps - If I had to chose again, I'd still chose Electrics as my main, but do my ACS/gas as a hobby ;)
