In my dim and distant past I remember seeing a video that I think was made by GEC at their test facility and it was about the effectiveness of HRC fuses, from what I remember they put a dead short at the end of a cable energised the circuit, fuses pop, no damage. Then they replaced the fuses with links, and this is where my memory fails me a bit, I remember footage of busbars twisting, and I think a transformer and cable vapouised.

Anyone else remember this video, or even where I could get a copy, as I think it would be an excellent training aid for our trainees. I remember at the time thinking that the video looked old, so it must have been made in the early 70's:innocent.

Thanks folks Steve

Just as an update, I have actually managed to get a copy of the video, I didn't even have to convert it from video format, a mate had a copy of it on his hard drive, it was just a case of asking enough people.

I remember the video, was shown it in '81 and it certainly wasn't new then! I'd love a copy to show my apprentice. Is it something you could email?

I'll try, might exceed my email limit, if it doesn't work I will burn a cd for you and post, can you pm me your details.

It was 81 I started my apprenticeship and I think I first saw the vid then as well.

Off topic, but when I was younger, we did some silly things.

My mate had an old car battery, and wanted to make a bang. So he got a steel bar, dropped it across the battery terminals and ran, hoping for a big bang.

All that happened was the steel bar glowed red for a while and the battery fizzed a bit, but it didn't go bang. It did get quite hot though.

Last week that one, wasn't it Dave ? :coat :C

As a 15yr old Apprentice I shorted one of the many cells on an electric fork lift truck battery with the lifting hooks .

Top blew off into my face , a pair of hands grabbed me and shoved my head under a thankfully nearby water tap , no ill effects other than a lasting respect for the power that can be unleashed on the untrained and unsuspecting.

Hands belonged to one of the sparks BTW :pray

Riggy file is 110MB so I will burn a cd and send to you.

Re the power of batteries very similar to Evans as a 16 year apprentice who know nothing I attempted to clean all the fur of a set of forklift batteries with a wire brush, top blew off one of the cells covering me, tap also close so gave my face a wash, didn't think much more about it until my overalls came back from the wash with a moth eaten front on them, had to think how did that happen, ah yes I remember now.
