Another question for Miss Sweede  .

At one time in this area , to replace a damaged or metal domestic cut out  they were done live  in about 1/2 hour.

Then H&S kicked in .

Digging team turn up ...dig hole .

Jointing team turn up , chop supply cable , make safe .

Another team turn up , replace cut-out while its dead.

Jointing team revisit , through joint the chopped cable .

Another team turn up , fit meter tails to cut-out & re- energise house .

Why didn't the jointing team just change the cut-out live , refit tails and run off giggling .?  Has to be safer than cutting a live cable .?

( not sure what they do now WP are here)

The logic goes that it's safer to open up and cut the cable than it is to do a live c/o change as that exposes both the live phase and the neutral at the same time. And a service cable doesn't take long to put back together once the c/o has been changed.

Yes, but what a waste.. Why not just shut the street off?? So the power will be off for half hour, not the end of the world.. Must be horrible for you lot in the freezing cold and rain digging holes just because some prat somewhere decreed that you were not allowed to cut the power off...

john...

Welcome to the world of being a jointer :D

Pulling fuses and turning the whole street off even for a short time would interfere too much with people's supply. We do it when we have to, but if it's another way around it... There's only so many times in a day that you wanna get shouted at by angry people :)

Yes, but what about the poor jointer....

When they spent a few days in my street recently, i was out in the rain and cold with them doing what i could. There was only one prat trying to be funny complaining that their power would be off for half an hour. They were phoning bosses to complain to try to get things stopped and all sorts despite the fact that it was nearly 10pm in the night and there were about 6 blokes all there working their bollocks off... One bright jointer said; "ok, we will leave it, but see that black stuff [it was pitch in an old joint!!] that is where it is all burnt!! and when the rain gets in it you will go off anyway.

Sudden change of attitude.... "oh, ok, errrm, yes, errrm, ok, do it then.

Everyone else brought them cups of tea and home made cakes and biscuits and made a fuss of the poor blokes....

The majority of people that I meet at work are actually really nice. One guy a few months back had his driveway dug up for the third time in a year. (Once by the gas board and once due to a previous fault on the main). He could understandably have been a bit pissy when we came along but no, he was practising for the next round of the Great British Bake-Off and had us sampling his coconut ice so we could tell him if it needed improvement! :D

But if I had a penny for everytime I've heard "I'd offer you a cuppa but I have no electric"... I'd be more than halfway to a decent deposit for a house! :)
