Are halogen down lights dimmable? How do you find out if the tranny for the lights will be compatible with the dimmer tranny?

Any advice is good advice :)

Cheers

You can get dimmable transformers for halogen down lights, but not all transformers are dimmable.

Also make sure when you get the dimmer that its a good quality one, mentioning no names but the cheaper options will not work and you will think it's the transformer.

It's for an existing light circuit so is there anyway to check if the current downlighting can be dimmed?

Have a look on the transformer itself, i.e. pop a light out. Most newer transformers do say inductive and/or resistive dimmable. Of course older items may not. Halogen lamps themselves are dimmable, e.g. 230v halogen lamps normal run fine providing that the min-max power ratings are followed.

Some dimmers require derating for halogen and some dimmers and transformers will hum if you dim them.

And if they are resting on a nice plaster board ceiling between some hollow floor joist space..

It can become a nice echo box to amplify the hum quite loud..

if you are trying to have a quiet romantic night in.....

with the lights dimmed.. :Blushing

and

Hhhmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm...................

Hhhmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm...................
