Id hold off on the Kiddie alarms after what ive heard today...details to follow when Mr KME gets online. Aico do a wired test station also as i recall.

Aico all the way for me.

And yes, they do a wired ( and a wireless) test / locate / hush unit, too.

The bit Jono is pertaining to is this:

Call to the house of a pub landlord this morning - I do all his electrical now, but these alarms were in the house when he bought it.

Kidde alarms, on "slick-fit" bases.

Last night, he turns on the landing light, and the MCB trips.

He assumes a lamp has gone; and toddles off to reset it.

Every time he tries, it trips back off immediately.

His missus, standing near the smoke alarm, sees that it is arcing, and smoking, and making the whole smoke alarm "light up" !!!

Further, the alarms then start sounding, in response to the smoke the smoke alarm is producing!!!!! :slap

Went today (photos to follow)......The slick-fit base is short circuit L-E; blackened, and the L terminal of the smoke alarm connector is half melted!!!!!

The photos will be going here, and to Kidde - I want to know what is in the base to go S/C; and cause such a reaction. Not good, imho........

Mmmm that's not good.....at least they had smoke detectors to warn them of the problem with the smoke detectors......( insert appropriate smiley as this is an iPad! )

Are these the new bases that they are promoting similar to the AICO ones?

I have tried most of the ones on the market when cost has been a factor....a couple of quid cheaper, a haemorrhoid to fit. AND they take twice as long to fit...so AICO for me. And lithium battery if customer will stand the cost

I always use Aico you may get the odd one that plays up but generally there is a reasons possibly an insect getting into the alarm or incorrect alarm. As suggested by others I now use optical downstairs if its outside the Kitchen. I did have one pack up after a year a few weeks back. This actually was a failed battery which was very surprising as it was a duracell. I don't think duracell batteries are the same quality as they used to be.

Thanks all. Aico it is then. Best place to get them?

EDIT: Just realised the sponsors do them! I may post up a drawing - it's a bit of an odd one. Oil boiler in very close proximity to hob & oven etc.
