I'm not a diver but have always fancied giving it a go.

I'd like to dive on the war time wrecks at Truk lagoon.

A lot of my mates have dived Truk

i feel, with my current situation , it may have to wait a while.  But I WILL do it one day, one day!

had some nice dives at Dorothea Quarry in Wales

Scapa Flow is very interesting

Jackson and Woodhouse Reef in Straits of Tiran ( Red Sea) are excellent

actually ANY dive is good, just that some are F good!

Anybody watch this?

if you did, then this is me and my wing man diving tthe Arch a few years ago...Arch (640x618).jpgP1010006.JPG0101.JPG

me walking like a gazelle to the entry point....bloke in front is carrying my two extra cylinders and all my safety/spare stuff.

Out of the water the kit weighs in at about 70kg and its no fun carrying it in 34 deg, C heat.

some of the kit is cobbled together out of various bits including some Volvo seat belt webbing, plastic Fly fishing reel

.......just diving

Watched tonight.

Respect for anyone who does that, who knows what they`re doing.

As for the rest - they become the statistics......

I KNOW I couldn`t; and wouldn`t want to....... if dive instructors can get dead in there - no much hope for us mere mortals.

The prog was very well edited for viewing purposes

There are still a few poor souls still on the bottom...the families want their loved ones to stay there as a reminder to others!

The prob with the majority of the people that dive the Arch is that they are only recreational divers certed to 18m. Or advanced divers certed to a max of 40m....and that is on Air.

Not many agencies will cert deeper than 40 m on Air. There exists a deep air course but it is of little value really.

nitrox will allow you to stay longer BUT go shallower.

We dive it on a starter gas of 32% oxygen, switc.hing to a helium/ nitrogen/ oxygen mix. Then doing numerous stops on the way back, getting back on to the 32% at about 30-35 m, then switching to 80% oxygen at about 6 m. We could easily be at 6m for 45 minutes!

There is a LOT of physics and maths involved in doing it right. Even though we usually have 2 dive computers each we also carry backup tables and bailout charts AND have to be able to,recalc our gases ifit all goes pants ( whilst underwater )

We are all qualified on a Martini ticket....any gas any where any depth ( open circuit )

It certainly focuses the mind

not for me,  scary ****.!!!!!!!    [ BTW, I cant even float, never mind swim.! ]

but, a man to his sport,

I would suppose its very akin to a diver as doing the Isle of Man TT is to a bike racer.
