Really depends on what it is, the type of motherboards used in severs can be very different in layout so might not fit in an ATX case, if you salvage parts you might find that the CPU is a Intel Xenon, so you would need to check any replacement MBoard can take it, and lastly Servers use ECC type memory, you can't use this in anything other than a severboard, I was given a 4GB ECC memory which I can't use for this very reason :(

Lastly the graphics chips on severs don't have the performance usually to run current games, but would be ok for office apps and web browsing

If you can get me the make and model of the rack server I can offer advice

i am purley running it as a server the software is windoze homw server, i dont currently know any info about it yet:( , if i cant change the case could i put it in the loft be making something out of 2x1 batton the case in question is a server case and desktop in one then i could put is next to the rest of the computers:), then that would save me having to pull up mulitaple cables e.g: power, network cable x2, power switch remote, cooling management, etc this all costs:(

Not forgetting lofts are dusty places and can get hot in the summer, not the best environment for a PC reliability wise

Indeed with dust the cooling paths will get blocked and the box will overheat and go pop and that will be worse in the summer.

When Compaq first released their DL3x0 range (early 10 years back now), they gave it to one of their customers to test for reliability and he wrapped it in tape and foam to stop airflow. The box lasted a day before dying. I bet it was a fire risk by then too.

Ian.
